Citizen’s arrest: Girl foils would-be thief with iPhone app

find my iphone app

Recently, 18-year-old Elizabeth Curtiss and her friend, 15-year-old Annika Anderson, found themselves in the empty parking lot of a Sherwood, OR movie theater well past midnight, staring in amazement at Anderson’s phone. The two had left the theater around 12:45 a.m. after seeing a late movie, but quickly returned when Curtiss realized her phone was missing. A search of the theater they were in turned up nothing, and they went back to the car completely stumped.

That’s when Anderson downloaded Apple’s Find My iPhone app. Within moments, the two girls were stunned to see an icon representing her phone moving across a satellite image of the theater they had just left.

“You could refresh it and it was in different spots,” Curtiss told the Sherwood Gazette. “I thought, ‘that’s suspicious.’”

find my iphone caseSo did the cops. The girls called them after the theater’s cleaning crew refused to let the girls back in, despite the fact that the app clearly showed the phone was moving around the building. Before long, Curtiss and Anderson were back in the theater with two police officers, wondering why a phone that was lost in Theater 8 was now, according to Find My iPhone, in Theater 9. The four cleaning service employees, who were now the only other people there, all denied any knowledge of the phone’s whereabouts.

They might have been vindicated when a search of Theater 9 turned up nothing up, but Curtiss’ suspicions were confirmed when calling the phone revealed it had been shoved into padding that lined the theater walls for sound-proofing. One of the cleaning service employees confessed, and was charged with second-degree theft.

It’s likely developers had entirely different cushions in mind when they envisioned Find My iPhone being used.

“Everyone’s got a smartphone and knows about these kind of ‘find my phone’ apps,” Captain Mark Daniel of the Sherwood Police Department told us. “But it’s the first time a citizen has provided this sort of service to us.”

Its incredible what the iphone can do. I also have that app, hopefully it works if this ever happened to me. I also love playing Toy Store Delivery Truck, Singing City, FlySmacker, Guess Who Silly Shadows and Baby Tap and Learn. Its become an invaluable daily tool my entire family uses. Apple is the best company ever.

Does find my iPhone work if the thief has already gotten a hold of your phone and removed the chip and has wiped it clean? Anyone know?
    1. The short version is, kinda. If an iPhone is reported to Apple as stolen they will know when someone tries to use it on another account and can/will lock it, basically making it useless. It doesn't matter if the thief completely wipes it clean or not the phone retains it's unique IMEI number.

Its incredible how useful all these apps can be. My favorite is Toy Store Delivery Truck and FlySmacker.

That's great the the employee tried to hid the phone in the wall. Should have just given it back when they asked for it. Instead they now have a charge on their record

I love hearing stories about these apps being used successfully, along with people using similar technology to find lost MacBooks.

Hopefully more police forces will take these kinds of apps seriously in finding more stolen items instead of just filing reports and leaving it at that.

I got mobbed before and they took my iPhone
    And ipad

I contacted the police and gave them my iCloud login because the officer who responded have an iPhone.I trust them that's why I gave my login info.
He tracked it and was able to arrest the thief.
How? It was late at night and the gps location is showing an apartment building. There was only 1 room with their lights on which became the target. They asked the mother if the son just came home and he she said yes. They found the iPhone and ipad inside his room lol.

Just a reminder though. Find my iPhone on me.com doesn't work on android browser. It forces you ti download the app.

How does someone get into a cinder block wall to hide something. All I can picture is some idiot with a hammer going at it!
    1. Not a cinderblock. In theaters, the sound dampening is on the wall like wallpaper, not behind it (wouldn't make sense for sound dampening to be behind the wall...)

I have never used this app. It might be time to try it out!

    1. I use it all the time for my kids Touch and the iPad. Works awesome, especially just sending ping alerts so you can track down just in case if you have it on vibrate.
